7 Writing Prompts for a New Year
The beginning of 2023 is a great time to write about intentions.

One of the many beautiful things about the start of a new year is that it can be an inspiration for change and transformation. A new year can be viewed as a chance to reflect on the past and get us ready to embark into the future. Perhaps you’re interested in experimenting with a new form of writing or have other ideas for New Year’s resolutions.
Writing down our thoughts increases our chance of manifesting them. As Maya Angelou said, “Ask for what you want and be prepared to get it.” It’s important to keep your journal in a place where it’s easily accessible. Keep it close not only so you can be ready to write, but as an opportunity to frequently review your musings over the course of the year, and perhaps add or delete as your thoughts evolve with the circumstances of your life.
Writing as a way to foster change in our life is one way to begin the new year. There are two ways to do this. The first way is by engaging in stream-of-consciousness writing, otherwise known as automatic writing or writing without stopping for 15–20 minutes. The second way is using writing prompts. Sometimes we just need prompts to get us going. Here are a few to give you a jumpstart:
1) Write a letter to yourself in which you reflect on 2022. How did it go for you? What might you do differently to make things that better for you in 2023? Discuss your challenges, hurdles, accomplishments, and concerns.
2) Be mindful of your inspirations. Write about a situation or person/s that inspires you and makes you feel good.
3) Practice mindfulness. Take about 30 minutes to just sit quietly with your eyes closed. Think about yourself, your environment, and the people with whom you regularly interact. Crack open your journal and write about the experience of your stillness. What did you notice? What thoughts were running through your mind? What were you obsessed with?
4) Write about what you will do to nurture yourself in 2023. What type of self-care will you engage in? Think and write about what brings solace to your body, mind, and spirit. Sometimes we have a choice who those people will be, but at other times we don’t.
